REAL Scientists.

REAL Faith.

Does science lead to Atheism?

Can REAL scientists have REAL faith?

Consider these giants of science!

Nicolaus Copernicus was the first to provide mathematical evidence that the Earth goes around the Sun. Did you know he was a Canon Official of his Church, and repeatedly referred to the Creator in his groundbreaking book, On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres? For example, in the Introduction he says this about astronomy:

For when a man is occupied with things which he sees established in the finest order and directed by divine management, will not the unremitting contemplation of them and a certain familiarity with them stimulate him to the best and to admiration for the Maker of everything, in whom are all happiness and every good? For would not the godly Psalmist [92:4] in vain declare that he was made glad through the work of the Lord and rejoiced in the works of His hands, were we not drawn to the contemplation of the highest good by this means, as though by a chariot? (See for yourself!)

Galileo Galilei helped us to understand gravity and the motion of projectiles, pendulums, and objects in free fall. He was the first to use a telescope to study the heavenly bodies, thereby providing empirical evidence for the moons of Jupiter, craters on the moon, and heliocentrism. Did you know he believed the Bible was divinely inspired and that nature owes its very existence to God? In his famous work, Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems, he said:

No, when I consider what marvelous things and how many of them men have understood, inquired into, and contrived, I recognize and understand only too clearly that the human mind is a work of God’s, and one of the most excellent.” (See for yourself!)

And in his 1615 letter to the Grand Duchess Christina of Tuscany, he said:

“For the holy Bible and the phenomena of nature proceed alike from the divine Word, the former as the dictate of the Holy Ghost and the latter as the observant executrix of God's commands.” (See for yourself!)

Johannes Kepler discovered the very laws of planetary motion which we used to put men on the Moon and rovers on Mars! Did you know he also studied to be a Christian minister and expounded on the Bible in his scientific writings? In fact, he saw science as a divinely-appointed calling. In a letter to a colleague he said:

I wanted to become a theologian; for a long time I was restless. Now, however, behold how through my effort God is being celebrated in astronomy.” (See for yourself!)

And in his first book, The Cosmographic Mystery, he wrote:

“Yet here we are concerned with the book of Nature, so greatly celebrated in sacred writings…Why then as Christians should we take any less delight in its contemplation, since it is for us with true worship to honor God, to venerate Him, to wonder at Him? The more rightly we understand the nature and scope of what our God has founded, the more devoted the spirit in which that is done.”

Then, in speaking of Psalm 19 which says, “The heavens declare the glory of God,” Kepler wrote:

“What voice has the heaven, what voice have the stars, to praise God as a man does? Unless, when they supply men with cause to praise God, they themselves are said to praise God. And if we reveal this voice for the heavens in these pages, and make it clearer, no one should charge us with a vain deed or with undertaking useless toil.” (See for yourself!)

Isaac Newton was arguably the greatest, most prolific scientist of all time. He discovered the 3 Laws of Motion, the principles of optics, and was the first to discover Calculus. Did you know he wrote more about theology and the Bible than he did about math and science? In his masterpiece work, The Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy, he said of the Creator:

This Being governs all things, not as the soul of the world, but as Lord over all; and on account of his dominion he is wont to be called Lord God or Universal Ruler…And from his true dominion it follows that the true God is a living, intelligent and powerful Being; and from his other perfections, that he is supreme or most perfect. He is eternal and infinite, omnipotent and omniscient; that is, his duration reaches from eternity to eternity; his presence from infinity to infinity; he governs all things and knows all things, that are or can be done.” (See for yourself!)

Robert Boyle is considered to be the founder of modern chemistry and of the prestigious Royal Society of Scientists. We apply Boyle’s Law every time we use a syringe, air pump, or vacuum cleaner.  Did you know he wrote a book called The Christian Virtuoso: Showing That by Being Addicted to Experimental Philosophy a Man Is Rather Assisted than Indisposed to Be a Good Christian”? In it he said:

“The consideration of the vastness, beauty, and regular motions of the heavenly bodies, the excellent structure of animals and plants, besides a multitude of other phenomena of nature, and the subserviency of most of these to Man, may justly induce him, as a rational creature to conclude that this vast, beautiful, orderly and in many ways admirable System of things that we call the World, was framed by an Author supremely powerful, wise, and good, can scarce be denied by an intelligent and unprejudiced considerer. And this is strongly confirmed by experience, which witnesses that in almost all ages and countries, the generalities of philosophers and contemplative men were persuaded of the existence of a Deity by the consideration of the phenomena of the Universe, whose fabric and conduct they rationally concluded could not be deservedly ascribed, either to blind chance, or to any other cause than a Divine Being.” (See for yourself!)

Blaise Pascal was a young prodigy made major discoveries in mathematics (Pascal’s Triangle), created the first barometer, discovered the principles of hydraulics, and is the namesake of the SI unit for pressure. Did you know he wrote a Christian devotional book called Pensees that is a collection of thoughts and arguments defending the Christian faith against Atheism. In it he said:

“Let man then contemplate the whole of nature in her full and lofty majesty, let him turn his gaze away from the lowly objects around him; let him behold the dazzling light set like an eternal lamp to light up the universe, let him see the earth as a mere speck compared to the vast orbit described by this star, and let him marvel at finding this vast orbit itself to be no more than the tiniest point compared to that described by the stars revolving in the firmament. But if our eyes stop there, let our imagination proceed further; it will grow weary of conceiving things before nature tires of producing them. The whole visible world is only an imperceptible dot in nature’s ample bosom. No idea comes near it; it is no good inflating our conceptions beyond imaginable space, we only bring forth atoms compared to the reality of things. Nature is an infinite sphere whose centre is everywhere and circumference is nowhere. In short it is the greatest perceptible mark of God’s omnipotence that our imagination should lose itself in that thought...” (See for yourself!)

Michael Faraday radically changed the world by discovering electrochemistry, inventing the transformer, and making the first electrical motor. He’s also the namesake for the official SI unit for electrical capacity called the farad (F). Did you know he served as an elder and lay minister at the church he faithfully attended his entire life? He preached many sermons and began each day with prayer and Bible study. In a lecture on education he said:

“Yet, even in earthly matters, I believe that the invisible things of Him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead ; and I have never seen anything incompatible between those things of man which can be known by the spirit of man which is within him, and those higher things concerning his future which he cannot know by that spirit…for the book of nature, which we have to read, is written by the finger of God” (See for yourself!)

Gregor Mendel is known as the “Father of Modern Genetics” as he revolutionized science by discovering the laws of inheritance. Did you know he devoted his entire life to Christ as an Augustinian monk? In fact, he performed his famous pea plant experiments in the garden at the monastery where he lived! In one of his sermons he said:

“So must nature and supernature unite with each other to bring about holiness in man. Man must give every ounce of his work to this effort, and then God will give its flourishing. It is true: our beloved God gives the seed, the talent, the grace, and man has only to work, to accept the seed, to bring the money to the bankers. By this means “we have life, and that in abundance.” (See for yourself!)

James Prescott Joule is known as “the Father of Thermodynamics” as he was first to demonstrate the relationship between work and heat, and define the Law of Conservation of Energy. It’s for this reason “Joule” became the SI unit for energy and work. Did you know he was a devout Christian? He said:

“After the knowledge of, and obedience to, the will of God, the next aim must be to know something of his attributes of wisdom, power, and goodness as evidenced by His handiwork.”

In a scientific paper he wrote and presented on matter, energy, and heat he said:

“Thus it is that order is maintained in the universe — nothing is deranged, nothing ever lost, but the entire machinery, complicated as it is^ works smoothly and harmoniously. And though, as in the awful vision of Ezekiel, ^' wheel may be in the middle of wheel,'' and every thing may appear complicated and involved in the apparent confusion and intricacy of an almost endless variety of causes, effects, conversions, and arrangements, yet is the most perfect regularity preserved — the whole being governed by the sovereign will of God.” (See for yourself!)

William Thompson (Lord Kelvin) discovered the Law of Entropy and gave an understanding of the principles of refrigeration. This is why scientists measure absolute temperature in “Kelvins.” In his presidential address to the 41st meeting of the British Association for the Advancement of Science he said:

“But overpoweringly strong proofs of intelligent and benevolent design lie all round us; and if ever perplexities, whether metaphysical or scientific, turn us away from them for a time, they come back upon us with irresistible force, showing to us through Nature the influence of a free will, and teaching us that all living beings depend on one ever-acting Creator and Ruler.” (See for yourself!)

James Clerk Maxwell discovered the laws of electricity and magnetism which enabled the dawn of the Information Age and global communication. He’s considered by many to be one of the top three most influential physicists of all time, right up there with Newton and Einstein! In fact, Einstein said, “The special theory of relativity owes its origins to Maxwell’s equations of the electromagnetic field.” Likewise, Richard Feynman said, “From a long view of the history of mankind — seen from, say, ten thousand years from now — there can be little doubt that the most significant event of the 19th century will be judged as Maxwell’s discovery of the laws of electrodynamics.” Did you know Maxwell was a devout born-again Christian? He wrote the following prayer to be part of the dedication in the second edition of his masterpiece work, Treatise on Electricity and Magnetism:

"Almighty God, who hast created man in Thine own image, and made him a living soul that he might seek after Thee and have dominion over Thy creatures, teach us to study the works of Thy hands that we may subdue the earth to our use, and strengthen our reason for Thy service ; and so to receive Thy blessed Word, that we may believe on Him whom Thou hast sent to give us the knowledge of salvation and the remission of our sins.” (See for yourself!)

Francis Collins was head of the Human Genome Project which was first to successfully sequence human DNA. Did you know he wrote a book entitled The Language of God: A Scientist Presents Evidence for Belief in which he explains how the Christian worldview can be a helpful motivation for doing real science and a much-needed moral guide for applying science in the real world. In it he says:

“There is nothing inherently in conflict between the idea of a creator God and what science has revealed. In fact, the God hypothesis solves some deeply troubling questions about what came before the Big Bang, and why the universe seems to be so exquisitely tuned for us to be here.”

And in another section…

“The God of the Bible is also the God of the genome. He can be worshiped in the cathedral or in the laboratory. His creation is majestic, awesome, intricate and beautiful - and it cannot be at war with itself. Only we imperfect humans can start such battles. And only we can end them.” (See for yourself!)

All of these besides Carolus Linneaus (Father of Modern Taxonomy), Georges Cuvier (Father of Geology), John Dalton (Father of Atomic Theory), Joseph Thomson (discovered the electron), Louis Pasteur (created vaccines, pasteurization, and germ theory), Joseph Lister (started antiseptic surgery), George Washington Carver (Father of Chemurgy), Samuel Morse (created the telegraph and Morse code), and many more of the best scientists our world has ever known! These great minds believed that science is perfectly compatible with belief in God. They were people with a passion for thinking God's thoughts after Him, seeking not only to benefit humanity, but also to bring glory to the Creator.
